Hello and Welcome to Democracy Americana!
I am a historian at Georgetown University and my work focuses on the recent history of American democracy and its discontents, on the struggle over how much democracy, and for whom, there should be in America, and on anti-democratic tendencies and impulses on the American Right since the 1950s. I am currently working a book project in which I try to situate the rise of Trumpism in American history. I write a regular column for the US Guardian on all things American democracy past and present, and I am the co-host of the “Is This Democracy” podcast, a weekly look at American politics, society, and culture through the lens of the ongoing struggle over whether or not the democratic experiment should finally be extended to all people regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation – or rather be curtailed and abandoned.
