Thank you for writing this! I'm in Texas and I can't leave. Why are so many people on the left wanting to throw us to the wolves? Texas used to be blue, ffs.

I don't want to throw you to the wolves, but I'm at a loss as to how exactly I can help. There is no vote I can cast, no donation I can make, that will make Texas a hospitable place to live for you. Frankly, I'm worried about your politicians taking power nationally and impacting my life up here in NYC. If you want to understand why people might be tempted by the thought of a national divorce, it springs from the same impulse as someone who's willing to amputate their leg to get rid of gangrene. It's not the optimal outcome, of course, but it might be the best realistic outcome.
I never said that they were. I genuinely feel bad for decent people who live in red states. I'm just saying that there's nothing I can do to really help them (if you disagree, and think there's a realistic plan to legalize abortion in Texas through state action, I'll listen politely but skeptically).
No donation, really? There are LGBTQ rights organizations in Texas. There's the National Network of Abortion Funds, which offers financial help to pregnant people in forced-birth states so they can obtain abortions. There are immigrant-aid organizations working on the border. There is *plenty* we can do from our relatively safe perches to help the radical right's victims.
All of those are good and helpful things. But none of them will actually make Texas a safe and comfortable place to live for people who need abortions, right? There's no realistic path to actual victory (where victory is defined as "anyone who needs an abortion in Texas can get one legally, safely and affordably").
I mean, sure, if you're considering only a 100% fix as worth doing. But a person who doesn't have to carry an unwanted or unviable pregnancy to term has a much better life than a person who does have to endure forced pregnancy. Civil rights organizations support queer and trans people. Immigrant-rights groups help reunite families, and provide representation in asylum claims. I neglected to mention groups that help people obtain ID for voting or provide transportation to the polls. All of these things combine to support the many, many normal human beings in Texas and other red states as they work toward genuine democracy.
I live in Chicago and I don’t want to throw you to the wolves. I think all people who believe in a multiracial pluralistic democracy need to unite, celebrate our different genders, races, religions, or lack of religion, cultures, accents, food preferences , etc. and stop letting the oligarchy pit us against each other so they can gain more and more power and money. CEO’s used to feel a responsibility to their workers and to their customers. The average CEO salary was 30x the average worker salary. Now it is 1460% of workers salary. https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-pay-in-2021/
This can only happen by decreasing quality of product of service, and decreasing worker salary and benefits.
While other countries have decreased prices post covid, Our companies continue to gauge their customers while they made historical profits which went into CEO salaries. and stock buy backs, not into workers salaries and benefits or quality products. “The Friedman doctrine has been very influential in the corporate world from the 1980s to the 2000s. This shareholder primacy approach views shareholders as the economic engine of the organization and the only group to which the firm is socially responsible. As such, the goal of the firm is to increase its profits and maximize returns to shareholders.”

They believe that anyone who has money and power has this because God chose them. Those of us with less money, power, education, or born as a woman or LGBTQ, or a person of color are determined By God to serve his chosen ones. The MAGA movement has used this to cause great division and fear. At 72, in my lifetime, this is the most frightened I have been for the future of our democracy, as well as for the health of the planet, I hope we see through all the strategies a small portion of the very rich and powerful are using to cause fear and hate and end up being the catalyst for a unification of all of us demanding human rights in support of a multiracial pluralistic true democracy, Unions are on the rise and this is a great example of the power of the people when we unite and embrace our differing gifts.

Oh, you think blue states would remain safe? And not everyone who lives in red states are garbage 🤡
