Excellent summary and analysis and now I have another book I need to read. Being a woman, I'm certainly used to being part of the group that ruins everything for straight white men and, I'm really, really tired of it (72 years old). I do not believe that this is the future but, like democracy itself, it is a constant fight.

Fantastic essay. Thank you. Been thinking about the 90s a lot lately and listening to early 90s alternative rock, which was basically mainstream rock music. Thinking about the Bush Sr. tenure and why he lost in 92. This piece fits nicely into what I’ve been exploring and gives it more depth and nuance. I was born in ‘77 and 1988-1992 was a very idilic time for me. Too young to be into anything of consequence, but old enough to remember it all. I am of the belief that 90s was peak society, but it makes sense that this smoldering mass of nascent reactionary right wing politics was simmering under the surface.
